  • Southwest Valley falls short versus Pleasantville, defeats East Union

     CORNING — The Southwest Valley boys’ basketball game winning-streak snapped at two games when they lost Friday night at home 73-54 to Pleasantville. 

    The Timberwolves fell behind early and weren’t able to recover.

    Scott Vanderhoof led with 18 points and 12 rebounds, giving the senior a double-double. Gunner McCuen had 12 points for the Timberwolves.

  • Vikings split going into Corner tournament

    STANTON —The Stanton Vikings fell short of getting two games over .500 before the Corner Conference tournament when they lost Friday night at home to the Sidney Cowboys 49-45.

    Stanton had a 22-17 lead at halftime, but Sidney took control in the second half to get the win.

  • RO bowling takes second at home tournament

    RED OAK — The Red Oak varsity bowling teams took second during last Tuesday’s Red Oak Bowling Tournament at Red Oak Lanes.

    The girls finished second behind Harlan with a score of 2,396, while the boys finished behind Lewis Central with a score of 2,902.

  • Red Oak falls in OT to Clarinda

     CLARINDA — The Red Oak boys’ basketball team fell short of completing a regular season sweep of Clarinda with their 88-80 loss in overtime at Clarinda High School last Tuesday.

    Red Oak had a 41-35 lead at halftime, but Clarinda fought back in the second half to tie it and force the game into overtime.

    The Cardinals outscored Red Oak in the extra four minutes 13-5, which proved to be the difference in the game.

  • Essex advances to Corner semifinals

    ESSEX — It’s on to the semifinals for the Essex Trojanettes as they defeated the East Mills Wolverines 60-20 Monday night in the quarterfinals of the Corner Conference girls basketball tournament at Essex High School.

    It was the second meeting in recent days between the two teams. Essex defeated East Mills 55-29 Friday night in Malvern.

    With the win, Essex will face off against the South Page Rebels, who knocked off No. 2 seed Nishnabotna Monday night.

  • Stanton eliminated in Corner quarterfinals

     COLLEGE SPRINGS — The Stanton Viqueens were eliminated from the Corner Conference tournament Monday night when they lost 39-30 to the Sidney Cowgirls in the quarterfinals at South Page High School.

    With the win, Sidney will advance on to play Fremont-Mills Wednesday night in Farragut in the Corner Conference semifinals.

  • East Mills wins big at Griswold

     GRISWOLD — The East Mills wrestling team went undefeated as they claimed the title at the Griswold Dual Tournament Saturday.

    East Mills won all five of its dual meets, defeating Exira-EHK, Treynor, Tri-Center, Griswold and Southwest Valley.

    East Mills held off Tri-Center to get a 36-31 victory. Nick Perkins (195 lbs.) had the lone contested win for the Wolverines. The bulk of East Mills’ points came via forfeit.

  • T’Wolves get both wins for week

    CORNING — The Southwest Valley girls’ basketball team has a three-game winning streak after defeating Pleasantville 62-40 Friday night at Southwest Valley High School.

    The Timberwolves took a 17-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.

    Marie Palmer led the way for Southwest Valley with 15 points and nine rebounds. 

  • Late bucket snaps Tigers’ win streak

     RED OAK — For Kuemper Catholic, their last scoring opportunity came on a wing and a prayer.

    It was Kierstyn Bauer who provided the miracle, snatching the inbounds pass and tossing up a floater as time expired, putting it through the net and ending Red Oak’s 10-game winning streak, defeating the Tigers 50-49 at Red Oak High School Friday night.

    “It was a bizarre ending,” Red Oak forward Grace Blomstedt said.

  • Red Oak wrestling takes eighth at ADM

    ADEL — The Red Oak wrestling team took eighth at Saturday’s ADM Tournament in Adel.

    Red Oak finished with a score of 59.5 points. Ames took first with 206.5, while Atlantic was second and Dallas Center-Grimes finished third.

    Tanner Mertz was the top finisher for Red Oak as he took first in 145 lbs. division. Luke Mellott placed third at 152 points. Alec Selberg was fourth at 132 lbs. and Caleb Orme was fifth at 126 lbs.
