• Griswold’s Kirchhoff signs with Morningside
     GRISWOLD — Griswold guard Kayla Kirchhoff knew instantly where she wanted to go. After making one visit to Morningside College in Sioux City last summer, Kirchhoff found her school for the next four years. “I had no idea where I wanted to go, but after my first visit, I knew that was the place for me,” Kirchhoff said.
  • Topham officially signs with Wichita State
     GRISWOLD — With their futures decided, Griswold runners Rebekah Topham and Alyx Flippin can focus on the remainder of their track season. Together, the two athletes signed letters of intent last Wednesday to compete in cross country and track for their respective colleges.
  • Majerus signs with Graceland for bowling
     RED OAK — After much consideration, Red Oak athlete Shane Majerus will be competing in bowling for the Graceland Yellowjackets next season. Majerus made it official when he signed his letter of intent last Monday at Red Oak High School.
  • LeRette to run cross country and track for Morningside
     RED OAK — It hadn’t been on his radar at first, but Red Oak cross country and track athlete Logan LeRette made it official when he signed his letter of intent last Monday to compete in cross country and track for Morningside College next year. Prior to signing with Morningside, LeRette had considered going to school out of state, possibly in California or somewhere along the Pacific coast. However, a friend recommended Morningside.
  • Southwestern CC volleyball season starts this week
     CRESTON — Fresh off a national quarterfinals appearance, the Southwestern Community College Spartans are set for a new season of volleyball. The season for the Spartans kicks off Aug. 19 with the Graceland Scrimmages. The first Iowa Community College Athletic Conference match takes place in Ottumwa Aug. 26 when SWCC faces off against Indian Hills Community College.
  • Red Oak tennis player Sherman signs with Grand View
    RED OAK — Red Oak tennis player Erica Sherman said the turnaround point for her high school career came last season when she stepped up her game and claimed the No. 2 seeded singles spot on the team. “Being No. 2 really gave me a lot of confidence that I could go on and play in college,” Sherman said.  Sherman signed a letter of intent to play tennis for Grand View University at an announcement Thursday morning at the Red Oak High School.
  • Bergren inks with Upper Iowa for basketball
     RED OAK — With her college choice in mind, Red Oak girls basketball player Blake Bergren can focus on her senior season of basketball and a repeat trip to Des Moines. Bergren made it official last Monday at Red Oak High School when she signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Upper Iowa University (UIU). “Now to have it be official, it’s just a great feeling,” Bergren said.
  • Bergren to sign with Upper Iowa
    RED OAK — Blake Bergren, Red Oak High School senior, has verbally committed to continue her education and basketball career at Upper Iowa University. Upper Iowa is a NCAA Division II university that participates in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. During Bergren’s junior season she helped lead the Tiger basketball team to their first state appearance in 90 years. She averaged 12.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.5 steals per game earning her second team All-Hawkeye Ten Honors.
  • SWCC volleyball starts season this month
    CRESTON — Fresh off a 23-17 season, the Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Spartans volleyball team looks to build off its record from last season. The team finished tied for fourth in Division II ICCAC standings with a 5-4 record. The season begins with a scrimmage against Graceland Aug. 21 in Creston. The scrimmage is scheduled for 4 p.m.
  • Morningside picked for 8th in GPAC poll
    SIOUX CITY — After a 17-16 season last year, the Morningside Mustangs volleyball team are set to go for the 2013 season. Morningside, 7-9 in conference last season, was picked to finish eighth in the Great Plains Athletic Conference pre-season poll. The Mustangs open the season with the Red Raider Classic at Northwestern College in Orange City on Friday and Saturday. Morningside will face teams such as Valley City State, Jamestown, Tabor College and Dickinson State at the tournament.
